The Story Behind Bora Lumière

Bora Lumière began, rather unexpectedly, in a theatre.

I was directing a production of Agatha Christie's A Murder is Announced and wanted to make a small gift for each of my actors.

I decided to make them candles.

But I didn't want to make the same candle for everyone. Each fragrance was chosen specifically for the character that actor had played — a small, personal reminder of the production and the weeks we had spent creating those characters together.

At the time, they were simply gifts.

I had no idea they would become the beginning of something much bigger.

From choosing fragrance to creating it

Those first candles sparked a fascination with fragrance.

Before long, choosing an existing scent wasn't quite enough. I wanted to know what would happen if I changed it.

I began blending fragrances, altering proportions and experimenting with combinations to create something that couldn't simply be selected from a bottle.

There were successes. There were plenty of failures. There were notebooks full of percentages, endless wax and wick tests and more than a few fragrances that behaved nothing like the scent I had imagined.

And somewhere amongst all that experimentation came Emberline.

Warm, woody and atmospheric, Emberline marked an important change. It wasn't simply a fragrance I had chosen; it had been developed and refined until it had a character of its own.

That opened the door to a much bigger idea.

Creating Bora Lumière

What had started with a handful of gifts was becoming a genuine love of creating home fragrance.

And I realised I didn't simply want to make candles.

I wanted to create a collection that could include candles, reed diffusers and wax melts; fragrances that could change with the seasons, evoke particular places and occasionally tell stories of their own.

Bora Lumière became the home for those ideas.

The name reflects much of what I want the brand to feel like: light, atmosphere, movement and warmth. The same thinking has shaped its visual identity — soft ivory, natural botanicals, texture and an understated simplicity that allows the fragrance itself to take centre stage.

The feeling comes first

Perhaps those first character candles influenced Bora Lumière more than I realised.

Because even now, I rarely begin by deciding that I want to create a fragrance with a particular list of notes.

I begin with a feeling.

Sunlit Grove began with freshly washed sheets drying outdoors on a warm summer day — sunlight, open windows and moving air. The challenge wasn't simply to create something fresh. It was to capture that feeling without allowing it to become soapy or smell like laundry detergent.

Other fragrances begin with very different ideas: a landscape, a season, a room, a memory or simply an atmosphere I want to recreate.

The starting point is a feeling.

The fragrance comes afterwards.

Made in the Yorkshire Dales

Today, Bora Lumière is hand-poured in the Yorkshire Dales, and living and working here inevitably finds its way into the brand.

Changing seasons, open landscapes, stone, woodland, weather and the simple pleasure of coming home to somewhere warm all provide inspiration.

Not every Bora Lumière fragrance will smell of Yorkshire.

But I suspect a little of Yorkshire will always find its way into Bora Lumière.

The story is only beginning

It's rather lovely to think that none of this began with a business plan.

It began with a theatre production and the simple idea of making something personal for the people who had helped bring it to life.

There are now fragrances still being developed, ideas scribbled in notebooks and future collections waiting their turn.

But I don't want Bora Lumière to release something simply because it's time for something new.

I want every fragrance to have a reason for being there.

Something considered. Something beautifully made. Something with a story behind it.

After all, that's where the very first candles began.

Welcome to Bora Lumière.
